i think i read something about anonymous bittorrenting, kids being arrested on college campuses or some horrible thing the mpaa tries to stop pirating almost everyday, but today, it hit home. here, in it’s entirety is the email i received today:

A computer within this house has been sharing copies of The Sopranos through the BitTorrent software. Violations of the copyright rights can lead to large fines or legal proceedings. Further violations will result in the cable modem network being turned off. Please remove this material and un-install any file sharing programs. This message below is the warning we send to on-campus network users: We have received notification from the Motion Picture Association of America that you are sharing copyrighted material from your computer. This is a violation of the copyright holder rights and Wesleyan computer usage policy http://www.wesleyan.edu/its/contacts/computer-policy.ctt. This is a serious allegation. Infringement is actionable under federal copyright law and can result in the payment of damages of up to $30,000 per infringing use. Damages could be increased to $150,000 if the infringement is found to be willful. Criminal penalties are also possible. Please delete this material from your computer and uninstall your file sharing program. Your computer has been quarantined so you will not be able to access Internet sites.
